Did you know that there are 3 islands in Paris along the Seine? Île Saint-Louis, Île de la Cité and Île aux Cygnes. Located in the 1st and 4th arrondissements, Île de la Cité is in the centre of Paris. Considered as the heart of the capital, this place is a must-see: Notre-Dame Cathedral is located on the island! The unique Île de la Cité is only 10 minutes walk from our Hotel Trianon Rive Gauche.
The origins of Île de la Cité
Île de la Cité used to be made up of three small islands: the Île aux Juifs, the Île aux vaches and the Îlot de la Gourdaine. In 1607, the 3 islands were joined together to build the famous Pont Neuf and the Place Dauphine.
These major transformations are the fruit of the Second Empire, and in particular of the Prefect of Haussmann who destroyed all the existing houses to make way for a set of buildings and large modern boulevards. The great works of Paris were a turning point in Parisian life. Hotel Trianon Rive Gauche is in fact a Haussmann building!
Virtual visit of Île de la Cité
What to do on Île de la Cité ?
- First, you can pass by the Hôtel Dieu. Founded in 651, this historic hospital is located right next to Notre-Dame. The values of the Hôtel Dieu are based on the tradition of charity of the Middle Ages when the nobles financed these medical and religious structures to accommodate the poor.
- Then, we advise you to visit the conciergerie of the Palais de la Cité which was used as a prison. It is in this same prison that the famous Queen Marie-Antoinette was detained in 1793! You can also visit the Sainte Chapelle built by Saint-Louis to house the relics of Christ.
- Also, walking around the Tour de l’Horloge, if you look up, you will find the oldest public clock in Paris, commissioned by King Charles V.
